Thai leader pushes Buddhist governance

Buddhist teachings can lead to a peaceful and just society, Thailand's Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont told the International Buddhist Conference in Bangkok
Monday. He said Buddha's teachings of right living and proper conduct can help society realize good governance and sustainable development in today's world.
The United Nations Development Program's report on King Bhumibol Adulyadej's "sufficiency economics," based on Buddha's "Middle Path" of moderation, proves
these principles work, he said, qhoted by The Nation newspaper in a story carried Tuesday on BuddhistChannel.com.
Monks and scholars from 61 countries are participating in the International Buddhist Conference on the United Nations Day of Vesak at the UN Conference Center, which will end Thursday. Five thousand monks attended its inauguration Saturday.
The theme of this year's Conference is "contribution to good governance and development." Buddhist universities in China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and elsewhere will form an association at the conference. On Tuesday world-famous Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh delivered an address on the Buddhist contribution to good governance and development.
In the afternoon, monks from around the world joined a chanting ceremony at the Temple of the Emerald Buddha to invoke blessings on the King in his 80th year.
