PM urges Thais to follow Lord Buddha's teachings

BANGKOK, May 27 (TNA) - Prime Minister Gen. Surayud Chulanont on Sunday urged all Thais to follow the Lord Buddha's teachings on following the Middle Path with the goal of attaining happiness in harmony with the sufficiency economy philosophy of His Majesty the King.

In his address to the International Buddhist Conference on the United Nations Day of Vesak Celebrations 2007 held at the United Nations Conference Center here, Gen. Surayud said the UN Day of Vesak, Visakha Puja Day, is an important day in the Buddhist religion as it marked the day that the Lord Buddha was born, attained enlightenment and nirvana.

As a Thai, Gen. Surayud said, he was honoured to have welcomed Buddhist leaders and guests from 60 countries of five continents.

Gen. Surayud went on to say that Lord Buddha's teachings on bringing about reconciliation and peace also is in line with the objectives of the United Nations.

He said Thailand was honored to host the International Buddhist Conference for the fourth consecutive year this year which coincides with His Majesty the King's 80th birthday celebration which falls on December 5.
