  His Holiness Somdet Phra Buddhacharya chairs the international meeting on Visakhapuja day

       On May 18, 2551/2008, His Holiness Somdet Phra Buddhacharya, President of the Executive Committee for the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand chaired the international meeting on Visakhapuja day, the internationally important day of the United Nations Organization at the United Nations ESCAP Hall (UNESCAP) in Bangkok. Those presented at the meeting are the leaders of community of monks, religious leaders, philosophers and academics, altogether numbering about 1,500 persons from 30 countries.

 

        On this occasion, His Holiness Somdet Phra Buddhacharya gave a speech in which he states, “the Supreme Sangha Council and the government know the importance of Visakhapuja, the internationally important day of the United Nations Organization and have arranged for a week of promoting Buddhism in each and every province of Thailand. We also support to hold a meeting for the community of monks, religious leaders, philosophers and academics at the office of the United Nations in Bangkok. Therefore in order that the community of monks, religious leaders, philosophers and academics come to the meeting and work together at this auspicious moment, the government and the Supreme Sangha Council assign the Mahachulalongkonrajavidayalaya and Phra Dharmakosajarn, Rector of Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University to organize this event.”

 

        This time the Supreme Sangha Council and the government of Thailand have managed to promote Buddhism on Visakhapuja day, the internationally important day of the United Nations in Bangkok and in each and every province of Thailand. In the meeting the leaders of monks, religious leaders, the academics and the government of Thailand appointed Phra Dharmakosajarn, Rector of Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University as the Chairman of the International Organizing Committee for the UN Day of Vesak Celebrations to organize the UNDV Celebration of Asia and the Pacific on Sunday May 18, 2551/2008 at the United Nations ESCAP Hall (UNESCAP) in Bangkok and Putthamonthon the attendance of which numbers about 1,500 persons from 30 countries.

 

        It has been a very great event with the preparation of the meeting of Supreme Sangha Council, religious leaders and academics, the exhibition of the biography of the Buddha, the practice of the Dhamma, the ceremony of walking with lighted candles in hand around a temple and listening to the sermons.
